Alcohol 'decreases arthritis risk'

People who never drink alcohol have a greater risk of developing rheumatoid arthritis (RA), new research has suggested.

Experts from the University of Sheffield conducted a study on more than 800 RA sufferers and 1,000 healthy people, and discovered that those who drink alcohol on 10 or more days a month have a decreased risk of developing RA.

The research, published online in the journal Rheumatology, also found that the symptoms of the disease are less severe if sufferers drink alcohol.

People were asked to record the number of days on which they had at least one alcoholic drink over the previous month. Those who had RA but drank 10 or more alcoholic drinks a month had less damage to their joints, and were more mobile.

James Maxwell, a consultant rheumatologist at the Rotherham Foundation NHS Trust, said that X-rays showed less damage to joints, inflammation had decreased, and there was less pain and disability.
He added: "We found that patients who had drunk alcohol most frequently had symptoms that were less severe than those who had never drunk alcohol or only drunk it infrequently."
