Steve D and Helping Hand announce Helping Hand’s Fund for the Elderly
Awareness campaign: September – November 2011
Steve D and Solidarity Helping Hand proudly announce the Helping Hand Fund for the Elderly.
The serious need among senior citizens is one of the pressing issues which Helping Hand is daily faced with. The artist Steve D realised the gravity of the situation since the release of his CD “Goud & Silwer / Silver & Gold”. During his publicity tour which started in January 2011, he performed at various retirement villages and senior care centres. Within the first week he realised the serious need for support and basic provisions at these institutions.
“As an artist, I can relieve their sadness and loneliness for an hour with my songs and stories, but when I leave, I always wonder: “Who will come back and help?” This concern changed my outlook on life, and I jumped at the opportunity to make a difference. I trust that the rest of South Africa will also realise that even a bar of soap or one packet of biscuits can make a huge difference in someone else’s life,” he said.
This experience brought about a transformation in Steve D’s personal life and professional career. He approached Storm Rekordz and Solidarity Helping Hand to establish a fund and to launch an awareness campaign on the fund. Basic provisions such as coffee, sugar, soap and tooth paste will be collected during the tour and will be distributed to senior citizens in homes in Gauteng who need it most. Steve D aims to get other artists involved to support this initiative.
The Fund for the Elderly will be managed by Solidarity Helping Hand. The fund will rely on donations from the public and corporate sector to supply in the needs of the elderly.
“Helping Hand’s value chain extends from toddlers to the elderly. Although the elderly are the pillars on which community is built, they are frequently cast out of society when it’s too difficult to supply in their needs. At Helping Hand we don’t ignore the important role which the elderly plays when a value-based future is created,” Dr Danie Langner, Executive Director of Solidarity Helping Hand said.
The awareness campaign will commence during the first week in August 2011 in national media. The public will be able to place their donations in shopping trolleys which will strategically be placed in shopping centres. These articles will weekly be collected by Helping Hand’s branches and will then be distributed to needy senior citizens in the various areas. During the tour, Steve D will perform at each of the participating shopping centres and Helping Hand representatives will be available to answer questions.
