Johannesburg Art Gallery (JAG) is excited to exhibit its Dutch collection between 13 November 2011 and 25 March 2012. This rich assortment of naturalistic artwork represents one of our most important historical collections made during the Golden Age (Gouden Eeuw) when the Dutch Republic was the most prosperous country in Europe. JAG's Dutch artwork were not part of the original foundation collection, but were acquired from 1947 onwards via bequests, gifts and purchases beginning with the Houthakker Bequest of seventeen paintings from Eduard Houthakker in Johannesburg between 1947-50.
Prior to the 17th century, when church patronage dominated in Holland and Flanders, Dutch paintings became fashionable in the homes of the bourgeoisie. These paintings were divided roughly into categories or types. The rise of pictorial genres first occurred in this period, namely histories, biblical, mythological, allegorical, landscape, still life with a moralistic message or with a vanitas theme concerning the brevity of life, genre representations of everyday life and portraits. This exhibition is arranged to best display these varying categories. Another hallmark of Dutch 17th century art is its new and dominant naturalism visible in varying degrees in this exhibition.
This exhibition comprises artwork in various media by a host of Dutch and Flemish masters, such as Rembrandt van Rijn, Esias Boursse, Pieter Claesz, Gerrit van Deurs, Jacob Duck, Lambert Jacobsz, Ludolph de Jongh, Frans de Momper, and Anthonie Palamedesz, amongst others. Original etchings are also included.
