Sister Lina Enslin and her husband Pierre started Blymoedig Clinic in November 1978.
Originally the plan was to take in 4 - 5 aged to look after, but with the opening, 10 patients arrived
and so Pierre and Lina did what was necessary. They and the children, moved out of the main house, which they equipped to be able to accommodate the patients and then they moved into the flat that had been fitted out for the patients.

Blymoedig is not a profit orientated company.

Lina is a very patient and dedicated Nursing Sister that has always had a soft spot for the older generation. She sees the caring for these people, not as a duty, but a way of life. She has been blessed with a lot of patience and so ended up caring for more and more patients that needed a lot of care because they had an unknown illness, that has now been identified as "Alzheimer-type-dementia".
The frail-elderly, for example people who suffered a stroke were also admitted.

Initially there were also a reasonable amount of cancer patients that had been referred to the clinic by the Cancer Association, because they were terminally ill and there was nowhere else for them to go.
But, the clinic seemed to be admitting larger numbers of patients that were brought there because they behaved abnormally.

Presently, Blymoedig Clinic is caring mainly for aged patients that have been diagnosed as having "Alzheimer-type-dementia". Patients that have been diagnosed as having other psychiatric disorders are also admitted.
There are presently patients in the Clinic who have been diagnosed as having, Schizophrenia, Parkinson's disease, Huntington's Chorea, Down's Syndrome, Major Depression, Mentally Impaired patients. There are also patients who have suffered brain damage through injury and other types of dementia.

Blymoedig Clinic is also a training facility for nursing assistants, which means that nursing staff can, and is, selected from the best trainees that are available, which obviously leads to a better quality of care for the patients. Patients who are vulnerable and defenseless needs to be in a caring environment.

With the number of patients constantly on the increase, it became necessary to plan for expansion and so it was decided to build the now existing complex. Pierre was doing the building himself. During the building operations there were outside organizations that got involved, among them the N.G. Church of Lynwood Ridge, who assisted financially as well as providing assistance in the form of labour.

The Clinic is situated in a very quite, peaceful environment that is ideal for patients with "Alzheimer - type" dementia because they are able to walk around freely without getting lost.
There are also pets, namely dogs, as well as farm animals that the patients have access to, which creates a homely, farm - type atmosphere.

Every effort is made to create a homely atmosphere, yet still provide a 24-hour nursing service that the patients need.

There are two church services held at the clinic every week that are enjoyed by the patients because they are reminded of the past and also provides a form of comfort to them during the difficulties they have to endure due to their illnesses.

The services are kept short to fit in with the patient's inability to concentrate for long and there is a lot of singing that the patients really enjoy.
Ladies from various churches in the area are very involved at the clinic and visit the patients regularly
and bring them tit bits, which is very special for the patients.

A hairdresser visits the Clinic once a week to care for the patient's hair at a very affordable price.
Only the patients whose family actually request that the patient's hair must be set are given access to the hairdresser. All the other patients hair is attended to by the nursing staff.
Accommodation is provided according to a patient's level of function ability.

There are 2 bed bedrooms, 4 bed bedrooms as well as dormitories. Dormitories are for the very frail. The reason these patient's are grouped together is so that more patients can be observed by the nursing staff, seeing that more staff are allocated to these rooms and the patient's are under continuous care.
All the patient's get dressed by the nursing staff in their own day-clothes and are then taken to the day room.
It is the policy of Blymoedig Clinic that every patient will maintain their dignity, irrespective of their mental or physical condition.
Activities are presented to patients individually at a level on which they are able to function. Too much pressure is placed on a patient when he/she shares in-group activities, because it is perceived that their shortcomings and inability to perform, cause embarrassment.

The patient's are provide with music as a form of entertainment and relaxation. The local community is very involved at the Clinic, and often invite patients to attend functions such as school concerts.
Incontinence is a big problem, especially among the Alzheimer-type-dementia patients. The Clinic has created a routine that enables the patient's to attend the toilet regularly. In some cases it is necessary to provide patient's with disposable nappies in conjunction with the toilet routine.

The patient's clothes are monitored and kept in a clothes store room. Patient's have their own clothing cupboard which is kept tidy by the clothing-store ladies who also put out each patients clothes for the next day that are suited for the activities and weather of that day. In this way the Clinic ensures that patients put on clean clothes every day and theft is also kept under control.
A visiting private doctor attends to patient's when necessary. The level of medical care is unfortunately dependent on whether the patient is on a medical aid or not or else the willingness of the patient's family to carry the medical expenses. Patient's with no medical aid are followed up by the doctor and nursing staff of the State Clinic.

Hospitalisation happens only in exceptional cases, illnesses such as pneumonia and heart failure are handled at the clinic. Before any patient is hospitalised it is first discussed with the family because the clinic is aware that it is very traumatic for a mentally impaired patient to experience a change of environment.

The nearest hospital is Montana Private Hospital in Zambezi Avenue, Montana.
