If you were at Rand Aid’s Ron Smith Care Centre on May 23rd 2017, you would have come across people dressed up in old-fashioned clothes. That’s because it was Vintage Day! The staff and residents were invited to wear something that was popular or fashionable in the past. They celebrated this occasion at the Vintage Day Happy Hour on Lakeside, one of Ron Smith’s Care Centre’s six wings.
During the day, the staff helped residents make cheese straws, savoury biscuits and sweetcorn fritters. These were all on the Happy Hour old-fashioned snack menu. The staff also decorated the venue with old record album covers on the walls (including Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, and Elvis Presley), old records and gold and black balloons. Music and fashion from the good old days were the order of the day and partygoers danced, moved and sang along to well-loved tunes.
As part of the fun, residents were divided into four teams and participated in a quiz. They were shown pictures of various celebrities including movie stars from the olden days, and were asked to identify them. Pictures of Fred Astaire, Marilyn Monroe, Shirley Temple, Audrey Hepburn, Charlie Chaplin and Doris Day were amongst those that were easily identified, but Lucille Ball had everyone stumped!
Results were close, but in the end, Team Green and Team Red tied for first place and prizes were awarded for the Best Dressed residents and staff.
Resident, Sylvia Lawrence, summed up the occasion by saying, “Thank you for the party, you created such a happy atmosphere for us!” Residents had a smile on their as they left the party and will no doubt fondly remember the occasion for years to come.
