Spoonbill Retirement Village on the West Coast is situated in the quaint town of Velddrif next to the fishermen’s village of Laaiplek. Velddrif is approximately 23km from Vredenburg, where a private hospital and the provincial hospital are situated, next to each other. Treatment at both hospitals is praiseworthy. The West Coast Mall is conveniently situated on the Saldanha Road just outside Vredenburg, making for shopping for supplies a breeze.
The Berg River that runs next to Velddrif contains a wetland which is home to many colourful flamingos and the very rare spoonbill, as well as pelicans (during the fishing season), the giant kingfisher and many other bird species. Velddrif also has a golf club and a bowling club for those who are keen, and whose joints still allow it. An arts and crafts club is available in Port Owen, about 2km outside of town.we
Spoonbill Retirement Village has an older building which has 23 one-bedroom flats, varying in size, and five two-bedroom flats, as well as three spacious bachelor flats. Shaded carports are available in the centre of the front courtyard. A brand new, beautifully finished complex can be found next to the older building, consisting of two one-bedroom flats, eight two-bedroom flats and one bachelor’s flat. Each unit has built-in-cupboards, a breakfast nook in the kitchen, a shower in the bathroom and sliding doors opening to a private stoep. Shaded carports are also available for these units.
Both buildings have security gates to which the tenants each have their own remote controls. The perimeter fences are secured with razor wire. Spoonbill is equipped with an elevator for easy movement to the first level of the older building. In-house caring is available for tenants in need thereof. Payment is made directly to the caregivers on contract.
We have a contractor doing laundry and cleaning of flats as required. We obtain meals once a day (Monday – Friday) from Aan Oewer which is run by Badisa. Additional meals can also be ordered. Shops are also available nearby.
Recreational activities are held weekly in the form of playing Bingo, Rummi-cub, walking and fishing and arts, held in the retirement’s hall. We further have a monthly get together event for the Spoonbill tenants, where all come together for a braai or potjiekos, or a market day. Bible study takes place weekly in the hall. A collection of books are also available to the bookworms in our midst.
We take pride in Spoonbill by ensuring a neat and clean facility that our tenants can be proud of and feel part of one big family, looking out for each other and enjoying the company of fellow senior citizens.
