Ekklesiapark Retirement Community in Blairgowrie, is celebrating its 50th birthday this year!
To commemorate and celebrate this special milestone, they planned a series of celebrations during the course of the year.
It commenced with the Autumn Breakfast on the 5th of May, presented by Friends of Ekklesiapark, a group of Dutch Reformed congregations involved in community service at the the retirement village. They were fortunate to have the former SABC newsreader, Riaan Cruywagen, as their special guest speaker. The residents spent a joyous morning reminiscing and reconnecting with friends.
The Spring Family Day on the first of September invited family and friends to share and enjoy a lovely spring tea and lunch. It was a memorable celebration that brought together grandparents, children and grandchildren to interact and have a good time.
The 19th of October marks the actual founding day of Ekklesiapark. A special birthday lunch has been planned for all the residents to celebrate the occasion.
To conclude the year’s celebrations, a special dedication and Holy Communion Service is planned on the 4th of November at the Randburg-Suid Dutch Reformed Church at 9H00, to give thanks for the grace Christ has granted our community and the Retirement Village. Read more…

Henley River Care Centre – Henley on Klip
In celebration of Heritage Day on Monday 24th September, the Henley River Care Centre hosted a singalong event, which was thoroughly enjoyed by the residents. Sing-alongs are definitely an event to add to the schedule more often.
The flower arranging tutorial was also a great hit and is also something residents will see more of during the beautiful summer months.
Rand Aid Association – Johannesburg
Rand Aid Association recently created a new post – Community Care Co-ordinator – to ensure that a dedicated person is available to identify any issues that may affect the quality of life and general well-being of residents in its retirement villages.
Filling the post is Sue Prior, a Sandton resident who has a Psychology Honours degree and extensive experience with seniors. Her role includes identifying areas of risk and concern and providing residents with help in coping with those life issues that arise as a result of changes in health and cognitive capacity by providing both short-term and end-of-life counselling and support.
Rand Aid Association has also been recognised in a World Health Organisation (WHO) report on the development of long-term care systems in sub-Saharan Africa.
WHO’s report, ‘Towards long-term care systems in sub-Saharan Africa’, lists Rand Aid under the chapter ‘Innovative approaches for delivering organised care’. It includes Rand Aid’s financial model as a possible pathway to promote sustainability, equity and accessible care.
At the same time, it recognises the importance of the organisation’s person-centred approach to improve the dignity of care-dependent older persons.
