At Protea Memory Clinic, we believe exceptional dementia care is about much more than what happens inside a resident’s room or during a clinical consultation. The environment surrounding a person can play an important role in how they feel, engage, and experience everyday life.
One of the features we are particularly proud of is our beautiful garden and outdoor environment. And now, we are taking it a step further. Protea Memory Clinic is currently investing in an exciting garden upgrade, designed to create an even more welcoming, engaging, and purposeful outdoor space for our residents.
It isn’t simply about creating a beautiful garden. Research increasingly highlights the value of thoughtfully designed outdoor spaces for people living with dementia, making our garden project an important extension of the personalised, holistic care we provide.
Why Gardens Matter in Dementia Care
For someone living with dementia, a peaceful outdoor environment can provide gentle stimulation while offering opportunities to relax, move around, socialise, and connect with familiar elements of nature.
Research into therapeutic gardens suggests that suitable outdoor environments may help to:
• Reduce agitation and stress • Support mood and emotional well-being • Encourage gentle physical activity • Create opportunities for social interaction • Promote meaningful engagement • Reduce withdrawal and passive behaviour
While a garden is not a treatment for dementia, it can be an important part of creating a supportive environment that promotes quality of life.
More Than a Beautiful View
At Protea Memory Clinic, our garden is intended to be enjoyed, not simply admired.
The sights, sounds, scents, and textures found outdoors can provide valuable sensory experiences. Flowers, birdsong, sunshine, plants, and fresh air can create moments of calm and enjoyment while sometimes stimulating memories from earlier life.
Simple activities can also provide purpose and familiarity. Watering plants, taking a walk, sitting outdoors with others, or talking about familiar flowers and trees can all become meaningful parts of a resident’s day. For someone living with dementia, these seemingly small experiences can be incredibly valuable.
Our Ongoing Garden Project
Our current garden upgrade reflects Protea Memory Clinic’s commitment to continually improving the environment and experience we offer our residents.
The project is focused on creating beautiful and purposeful outdoor spaces where residents can spend time in nature, relax, enjoy fresh air, participate in meaningful activities, and connect socially with others. As the garden develops, it will complement the warm, homely atmosphere that is central to life at Protea Memory Clinic.
Our vision is to provide residents with an environment that supports not only their care needs, but also opportunities for enjoyment, stimulation, movement, and meaningful moments throughout the day.
Part of the Protea Memory Clinic Difference
Our garden project is just one example of the way we continually look for opportunities to enhance life for the people in our care. At Protea Memory Clinic, residents benefit from personalised dementia care, meaningful daily activities, compassionate support, and an environment designed to feel warm and welcoming rather than clinical.
The garden extends this philosophy outdoors. Whether it is enjoying some sunshine, listening to birds, taking a gentle stroll, participating in a garden activity, or simply sitting peacefully among the plants, our outdoor spaces provide another way for residents to remain connected to the world around them.
Creating a Place Residents Can Truly Enjoy
Choosing the right dementia care facility is about more than finding somewhere that can meet a loved one’s practical needs. Families want to know that the person they love will be somewhere that prioritises dignity, comfort, engagement, and quality of life.
That is what we strive to provide at Protea Memory Clinic. Our beautiful garden already contributes to the warm and homely character of our facility, and our ongoing garden project represents an exciting next step. By investing in an outdoor environment specifically intended to enrich residents’ daily lives, we are continuing to build a place where specialised dementia care and quality of life go hand in hand. Because sometimes quality care can be found in the smallest moments: the warmth of the sun, the scent of a familiar flower, a conversation on a garden bench, or simply the pleasure of spending a peaceful afternoon outdoors.
At Protea Memory Clinic, we want to create more of those moments every day.
